About
Guidance and Counselling is a process of helping people to discover and develop their educational, career, and psychological potentialities, ultimately attaining an optimal level of personal happiness and social usefulness. 

This four-year program covers all the main areas of study required of a professional counsellor. It addresses issues in social psychology, developmental psychology, abnormal psychology, the helping relationship, testing and assessment, group work, research methodology, ethics in the helping profession, career guidance and development, and practical work.

The Bachelor of Social Science (Hons) Guidance and Counselling programme aims to equip students with comprehensive professional knowledge and skills for managing various psychological issues such as developmental challenges, behavioural difficulties, socioemotional distress and psychological stress from critical events and work. Students will be trained to work towards improving people's psychological well-being and achieving their full potential. Graduates of this program will be qualified to practice as a counselor to serve a wide range of clients, including students, working adults, people in crisis and etc.

  • Structured according to the requirements of the Malaysian Board of Counsellor.
  • Extensive opportunities for practical exposure in counselling
    • Faculty of Arts and Social Science operates UTAR Community Counselling Centre all year round. Students will get extensive opportunities to observe and assist licensed counsellors and clinical psychologists in managing a wide range of clients.
  • Cutting edge evidence-based counselling and psychotherapy procedures
    • This programme introduces the latest evidence-based counselling and psychological therapies to students. Students will learn well-researched and established counselling approaches to help people flourish and grow. 
  • Comprehensive counselling practicum and internship training
    • This programme includes more than 750 hours of supervised counselling practicum and internship training in Year 4. Students will be given hands-on, practical experience in conducting both individual and group counselling, as well as psychological testings
